He has 10 years of service as Director of Education with Scotland’s mostsuccessful ever Scots language project, Itchy Coo. He has taught Scots in over a thousand schools and delivered training to teachers in every local authority. He has lectured on Scots at universities in the UK, Europe and the United States.

A tireless advocate for the language, he has advised the Scottish Government on Scots education policy and lead a national campaign for the inclusion of Scots in Curriculum for Excellence. He supported the creation of Scotland’s first ever network of Scots Language Coordinators in Falkirk and was instrumental in establishing the General Teaching Council for Scotland’s Professional Recognition Awards for Scots Language Teaching.

Matthew’s work has enabled tens of thousands of children and young people to enjoy and explore Scots who may have never otherwise encountered the language at school. His contribution to Scotland’s heritage has been to empower a generation of teachers to make Scots an integral part of their teaching practice and to bring about a revolution in attitudes to the language in education.
